Literary Tourism: Toadvine Books in Detroit, Michigan
When I was in Detroit doing research for my book, Midwest Shreds, I got to hang out with friend of the blog, Jane Kahan! She took me to Book Beat and afterward took me to Toadvine Books.
Toadvine is technically in Berkley, Michigan, just outside of Detroit. They have new books in this front nook by the window and tons of used books throughout the rest of the shop.
I love to see floor to ceiling books! The more piles the better!
Don’t you just want to cozy up in that blue chair? That’s a good reading chair right there.
I highly encourage running your fingers down the spines of a long wall of books.
I found two books here and both are collections of short stories. One is Trash by Dorothy Allison and the other is The Seance by Isaac Bashevis Singer. I’d read Dorothy Allison before, but I didn’t know who Singer was and had never heard of him. I just let my intuition guide me.
For a small shop, Toadvine has an incredible selection. The breadth of genres is really refreshing.
And there are opportunities to dig through piles! I love digging!
So there you have it! If you’re in the Detroit area I hope you’ll stop in Toadvine Books.
