Thursday Word Day: Invective

Happy #ThursdayWordDay!

I've got a story for you.

I'm not sure if this is true in other parts of the world with different accents, but Southern accents are really hard for young kids learning to read and write. I remember thinking "at" was spelled "et" because of the way it was pronounced, and being flabbergasted when my kindergarten teacher tried to correct me.

Yet, some of these things still creep into the Southern dialect in adulthood and no one bothers to correct you. I don't think I realized that "cuss" was a derivative of "curse" until I was in high school.

What's this got to do with Thursday Word Day, you ask? Well, next time you're about to drop a "cuss" word, drop an invective instead.

Dictionary.com says, "invective: noun: 1) vehement or violent denunciation, censure, or reproach 2) a railing accusation; vituperation 3) an insulting or abusive word or expression; adjective: 4) vituperative; denunciatory; censoriously abusive."
